Toyota’s Durban assembly plant is up and running again after nearly four months of being out of commission and this means the Hilux, South Africa’s most popular brand’s most popular model, is once again the best-selling vehicle in the country.
The Hilux has been the top performer on the sales charts for years but for the past few months has been knocked out of first place due to flooding that severely damaged the automaker’s factory and caused production of the bakkie to cease temporarily.
In May, the Toyota sold 1,368 units guaranteeing it third place, in June it moved 969 for 11th place, and in July its 1,012 sales scored it 10th place. In August, however, it’s back in first with a massive haul of 3,417 models.
Toyota’s other locally-produced vehicles including the Corolla Cross and Hiace are benefitting from the plant re-opening, too, with both these models sitting within the top-10 best-selling cars for last month.
What’s also standing out about the latest new-vehicle sales statistics is car buyers’ favouritism for crossovers and SUVs.
These multi-purpose body styles took home nine out of the top-20 best-selling spots for August, with bakkies and hatchbacks sitting in second both taking up five positions.
