June was a solid month for hatchbacks, as evidenced by strong sales and the general recovery of the automotive industry over the past year.
The body shape has seen diminishing returns over the past few years as crossovers and SUVs have seen a corresponding rise in interest, but hatchbacks nonetheless remain a popular choice owing to their relative affordability compared to other vehicles.
The best-selling model in June was none other than the locally-made VW Polo Vivo, which moved 1,967 units and took the spot of South Africa’s fourth most-popular model overall.
This was then followed by the fan-favourite Suzuki Swift, which sold a total of 1,685 units.
Third place was taken by South Africa’s best-performing brand, Toyota and its Starlet hatch, which secured 1,415 new customers last month, and was the last model to reach past the 1,000 unit mark.
Hyundai managed to secure the fourth slot in June thanks to its Grand i10, which is expected to receive an update in the near future, and which sold 894 units.
Fifth place, meanwhile, was occupied by the ever-reliable VW Polo with 882 sales.
The rest of the top 10 entrants include the Renault Kwid, Suzuki Baleno, Suzuki S-Presso, Kia Picanto, and Toyota Vitz – who all drove away with a performance of between 753 and 278 sales.
