The Toyota Hilux comfortably triumphed South Africa’s sales charts in October, sitting on top with a total of 3,110 units sold.
The impressive number gave the bakkie a sizeable lead over second place, which was occupied by the much smaller VW Polo Vivo and its 2,280 sales, followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross in third with its 2,100.
The Hilux’s biggest rival, the Ford Ranger, grabbed the fourth position by pulling in 1,853 customers, whereas fifth place once again went to a Toyota, this time by the Hiace’s 1,546 sales.
Another popular bakkie, the Isuzu D-Max, then drove away with sixth after seeing 1,464 units roll through dealership doors. Toyota continued its impressive run owing to the Starlet’s 1,363 transactions and also took home seventh.
The battle for eighth and ninth was hard fought and narrowly won by the Suzuki Swift as 1,248 units of the hatch found new homes, a mere 13 more than the VW Polo’s 1,235 units.
The only half-tonne bakkie in the country, the Nissan NP200, proved to be as popular as ever and came in tenth place thanks to its 961 sales, while Chinese carmaker Chery swooped away 11th using its Tiggo 4 Pro, which garnered a tally of 856 models sold.
All three sitting within the 700-unit region, the Toyota Vitz earned the 12th, the Nissan Magnite the 13th, and the Huyndai Grand i10 the 14th position.
Renault’s budget-friendly Kwid scored it an entry in the best-sellers ranks, too, moving 661 cars to get 15th place, topping the VW T-Cross in 16th by 20 units.
The Hyundai i20 in 17th also had a great month with 635 vehicles getting new owners, while the last Toyota to make it onto the list was the Fortuner with 629 examples sold.
Coming in at 19th and 20th are the VW Polo Sedan at 628 and Mahindra Pik Up at 565 sales, respectively, showing that local car buyers have a propensity for affordable sedans and double cabs.
All counted up, the top 20 best-selling cars were responsible for approximately 53% of the 45,544 new vehicles sold in South Africa in October.
