5 important things that happened in South Africa’s car industry this week

These were the five biggest stories in South Africa’s transport industry this week.

South Africa’s new driver’s licences – More problems ahead

South Africa’s new driver’s licence cards have been delayed multiple times, with the appointment of a new Minister of Transport expected to hinder the rollout even further.

Industry stakeholders like the Road Freight Association says it will take time for the new Minister to find their feet and understand their position, which is likely to lead to more delays in introducing new cards to the country.

There have also been no updates regarding the rollout of the new electronic licences since August 2023.

Hyundai’s most affordable cars in South Africa get even cheaper

Hyundai has made significant price cuts to three of its most popular and, importantly, most affordable models in South Africa.

This includes the Grand i10 hatchback and sedan, the Venue crossover, and the i20 hatch.

The company is also planning to launch a new entry-level SUV called the Exter in the next few months.

This BMW won’t be on sale for much longer

The BMW X4 will soon be discontinued owing to changes in the company’s line-up.

The X3-based SUV coupe has virtually been made redundant by the new X2 and X6, which serve the same rolls whilst being more enticing packages overall.

The X4 is expected to disappear by the end of this year, as it is not getting a new release to coincide with the launch of the new X3.

More affordable VW Golf GTI discontinued in South Africa

VW has quietly discontinued the more affordable Golf GTI in South Africa.

Known as the Jacara Edition, it retailed for R16,700 less than the standard version due to the omission of key luxuries.

However, this small price cut was likely not enough to entice new buyers, ultimately leading to the hot hatch’s demise.

Gauteng is getting a new R950 flight next month

South Africa is getting a new flight from Johannesburg to Mbombela near the Kruger National Park in August.

FlySafair is opening a route between O.R Tambo International and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Mbombela.

Flights will occur on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with tickets costing as low as R950.
