Most popular used cars in South Africa right now – With pricing

The used-car market in South Africa is very healthy at the moment, recording a 14% month-on-month increase in activity in July to reach a total of 31,707 sales, realising a total transactional value just shy of R13 billion.
Data from AutoTrader shows that the Ford Ranger ruled the roost last month with a total of 1,903 sales, well ahead of its rival, the Toyota Hilux, which attracted 1,540 buyers.
Battling it out for third and fourth were the VW siblings of the Polo and Polo Vivo, the former coming out on top with its 1,384 sales versus the latter’s 1,179.
The only SUV on the list, the Toyota Fortuner sat slap bang in the middle of the top performers in fifth place, fielding 756 customers in July.
Moving onto sixth, the title was awarded to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class which moved 565 units, narrowly edging past the Suzuki Swift in seven with 513 sales.
Likewise, the Nissan NP200 only just managed to best the BMW 3 Series for eighth position, with the bakkie picking up 497 registrations and the sedan 471.
Closing out the top 10 is the Isuzu D-Max, a relatively fresh face on the list. The bakkie posted a 30% increase in monthly sales to reach a total of 436, allowing it to improve its standings from June by four positions.
In July, the average price of a used car rose slightly by 0.4% to R409,238, with the average age sitting at five years and mileage at 75,227km.
All brands experienced an uptick in market share bar one, Kia, which saw a decline of 13%.
AutoTrader CEO George Mienie attributes the improved performance in used-car sales to a recovery in the new-car market.
“Contrary to popular belief, an increase in new-car sales is good news for the used car market,” said Mienie.
“The increase in new-car passenger sales indicates that consumers are in a better financial position. What’s more, new-car sales fuel future used car-sales and newer vehicles feeding car parc growth.”
