Best-selling cars in South Africa

The Toyota Hilux has managed to widen its lead as South Africa’s best-selling vehicle in September 2024, ending with an impressive 2,942 units.

In contrast, its long-term rival – the Ford Ranger – actually dropped to third place with 2,382 sales, allowing the VW Polo Vivo to take its spot with 2,407 units moved.

Similarly, the Toyota Corolla Cross was bumped up to fourth with 2,045 purchases, while the Isuzu D-Max fell down to fifth on account of its 1,592 customers.

There were a few big changes last month as well, as the Toyota Fortuner shot up from 16th to sixth place with 1,086 showroom victories.

The Suzuki Swift, which is normally a safe bet in the top 10, didn’t crack the 20th spot this time around, though this is likely due to the fact that the next-gen model is around the corner and motorists are holding off on their purchase until the launch.

Instead, the rest of the top 10 consisted of the Hyundai Grand i10, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, VW Polo, and Nissan Magnite, which sold 1,062, 990, 948, and 869 units, respectively.

Looking at the top 20, the Suzuki Fronx outperformed its half-sibling Toyota Starlet Cross with 850 versus 713 sales, putting the former in 11th and the latter in 17th.

The Toyota Vitz then ended up in 12th with 814 purchases, narrowly pipping the Haval Jolion which scored 812 registrations, and the Mahindra Pik Up was the final bakkie on the list with 782 sales.

Two more hatchbacks, the Renault Kwid and Suzuki Baleno, moved 776 and 752 units, respectively, while the Suzuki Ertiga was the sole MPV in the top 20 with 717 buyers.

Finally, there’s the Kia Sonet and Toyota Starlet, which rounded the list with 710 and 626 transactions.

In total the top 20 cars in South Africa accounted for 23,633 sales, or 53.61% of the 44,081 vehicles picked up in September 2024.
