Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo is the go-to hatchback for South Africans, as evidenced by its strong sales in September 2024.

The entry-level Volkswagen sold a total of 2,407 units, a significant improvement on the 1,937 units from the month prior.

This gave the Vivo an enormous lead over the runner-up, the Hyundai Grand i10, which moved 1,062 units.

One major deviation in the sales charts this time around concerns the Suzuki Swift, which is usually a safe bet for the top three, yet the Japanese hatch dropped all the way down to eighth place in September.

However, there is a good reason for this, as the next-gen Swift is launching in South Africa very soon. This suggests Suzuki is running dry the remaining stock of the current-generation Swift before the arrival of its replacement, and that consumers are likely holding off on their purchase until the new models come out.

In its place, we have the fan-favourite VW Polo, which found 948 customers last month scoring the final spot on the rostrum.

Next up was the Toyota Vitz, which moved up to fourth with 814 sales, followed by the Renault Kwid with 776 buyers.

The Suzuki Baleno is now outselling the Toyota Starlet with 752 units compared to the latter’s 626, which may be explained by the recent introduction of the Starlet Cross crossover eating into the hatchback’s market share.

The final two entries consisted of the Suzuki S-Presso and the Hyundai i20, which saw 325 and 303 showroom victories in September, respectively.
