Most fuel-efficient bakkie under R500,000 in South Africa

Bakkies are incredibly popular in South Africa, but they can also be expensive to run, depending on the model you purchase.

While there are a handful of frugal options on the market, many of them tend to be rather expensive with a sticker that goes well over half a million rand.

If you are in need of a pickup that neither breaks the bank at the showroom nor at the pump, your best bet is the Peugeot Landtrek, the most economical double cab you can buy for under R500,000 in South Africa.

Cost-conscious

The Landtrek model you want is the Professional, which is a relatively new addition to South Africa’s bakkie landscape that launched in December last year.

It runs on a 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.1l/100km.

Its power stats clock in at 110kW and 350Nm, which is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Landtrek is available as a 4×4, but this option is noticeably more expensive at R545,900, and the added work needed to drive both axles means it has a higher consumption of 7.5l/100km.

The same is true if you want an automatic transmission as you’ll need to upgrade to the Allure, which costs R640,900 and burns 8.9l/100km.

Provided that you stick with the Professional, you’ll have a bakkie that is capable of driving for an incredible 1,127km between pitstops thanks to its 80-litre fuel tank.

To put this in perspective, diesel is currently retailing for a minimum of R19.37 per litre as of March 2025.

This means it costs R1,550 to fill up the bakkie, which translates to an average fuel spend of just R1.37 per kilometre.

Its frugal powertrain doesn’t mean it can’t compete with other pickups either, as the Peugeot is capable of towing up to 3,000kg while the load bed can accommodate 1,100kg.

It also comes with 16-inch steel wheels, electric windows, central locking, cloth seats, manual aircon, two speakers, a radio, Bluetooth, a multifunction steering wheel, dual front airbags, and ABS, but you’ll have to upgrade to one of the higher-spec models for more creature comforts.

Every Peugeot Landtrek is sold with a 5-year/100,000km warranty with the option to add a 5-year/100,000km service plan.
