2 South African car factories in trouble, the petrol price for August, and a Chinese bakkie brand making a comeback

These were the five biggest stories in South Africa’s transport industry this week.

2 South African car factories in trouble

Two of South Africa’s carmakers are facing economic pressures that could spell the end for their local factories.

Nissan is in dire financial straits and is reportedly looking to close seven facilities worldwide, including its Navara plant in Gauteng.

Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, has been severely impacted by the USA’s export tariffs, threatening the prospects of its C-Class plant in the Eastern Cape.

What to expect from petrol prices in South Africa next week

Month-end data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) indicates that motorists will enjoy a small reduction in the price of petrol this August.

Unfortunately, diesel users won’t be so lucky, as the fuel is expected to receive a bump in price.

The official fuel price adjustments will take effect on Wednesday, 6 August next week.

4 new luxury cars coming to South Africa

Volvo has announced that it will launch four new cars in South Africa within the next few months.

This includes the new EX30 Cross Country, an off-road-themed version of its best-selling crossover.

The company also plans to bring over the facelifted XC60 and XC90 SUVs, and the all-new ES90 sedan.

When you can buy the new Toyota Hilux Legend in South Africa

Toyota has confirmed that the new Hilux Legend 55 will launch in South Africa on 18 August 2025.

The Legend 55 is the latest special-edition variant for the fan-favourite bakkie, adding a host of exclusive new features.

The 55 will likely be one of the last models produced for the current-gen Hilux, as the new version is expected to break cover before the end of the year.

The Chinese bakkie brand coming back to South Africa

Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) is set to return to South Africa later this year.

The Chinese automaker first appeared back in 2007, but low sales led to the brand’s quiet exit from the local market a few years ago.

However, JMC has confirmed it will relaunch in South Africa with two bakkies – the Vigus and the Grand Avenue.
