Fuel restrictions hit South Africa, one province saying goodbye to potholes, and a new Suzuki SUV

These were the five biggest stories in South Africa’s transport industry this week.

Fuel restrictions hit South Africa

Several agricultural companies in South Africa have begun to limit daily diesel sales to farmers.

While major fuel station chains have not yet limited the sale of petrol and diesel, agricultural businesses in smaller towns and rural areas have started to ration the amount of fuel provided to farmers.

In parts of the country, suppliers have begun to limit diesel sales to 80 litres per customer per day.

The Western Cape is putting the power to report road maintenance issues in the hands of its residents through the Roads4U mobile app.

Launched by the Western Cape Government Department of Infrastructure (DOI), the app is available on both Apple and Android and allows users to report a wide range of infrastructure defects.

The app uses exact GPS positioning for reported issues and allows photos to be submitted. Users will then receive status updates with reference numbers from technical teams, informing them of the repair process.

Bad news for flight prices in South Africa

South Africa’s biggest airline, FlySafair, is adding a fuel surcharge to its ticket prices for the very first time, in hopes of protecting its long-term stability and low-fare offerings.

Effective from 12 March 2026, all tickets will include a new fuel surcharge intended to offset the skyrocketing cost of jet fuel.

Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, assured travellers that the surcharge is a temporary measure and that prices will return to normal once the ongoing oil crisis subsides.

Good news for motorists frustrated by delivery bikes in South Africa

Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht has stated that the company is working on training its Checkers Sixty60 delivery riders to address concerns that motorists have about their driving behaviour.

In a recent interview with eNCA, Engelbrecht said that these concerns are partly due to motorists’ driving habits, as many South Africans don’t drive defensively.

He added that the company will improve rider habits on its end and will intervene when it detects bad behaviour.

New Suzuki Across in South Africa – Pricing revealed

Suzuki has announced the pricing for the new Across SUV, which is scheduled to launch in South Africa by the end of the month.

It will be sold in three specifications, all of which are equipped with a 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine.

Prices for the SUV will start at R349,900, positioning it as one of Suzuki’s higher-end products in South Africa.
