Chinese car brands have gone from strength to strength so far this year, especially since brands like BYD and LDV have started reporting their local sales figures, and June was no exception.
Throughout the month, a total of 54,482 units were sold across South Africa, representing an increase of 7,213 units, or 15.3%, compared to the 47,269 units sold in June 2025.
This is according to a list compiled by The Citizen, using monthly sales data reported by the Automotive Business Council (Naamsa).
Notably, Chinese badges recorded yet another increase in total sales in June, stretching their uninterrupted streak of monthly sales growth.
GWM extended its stay at the top of the list with 2,608 sales, while its closest rival, Chery, was breathing down its neck.
The latter managed only six fewer sales than GWM, recording 2,602 units shipped, with a great deal of these being Tiggo 4 Pro models.
Two Chery sub-brands, namely Jetour and Omoda & Jaecoo, followed their parent company, with 2,054 and 1,416 sales respectively.
While GWM, Chery, and Jetour managed to cement their places in the top ten of all manufacturer sales, BYD joins Omoda & Jaecoo in the top 15, with 800 total sales in June 2026 – the first time it has reached the 800-unit mark.
Out of the 54,482 reported industry sales, an estimated 47,368 units, or 86.9%, were dealer sales, while an estimated 7.8% were sold to the vehicle rental industry, 2.8% to the government and 2.5% to corporate fleets.
In June 2026, the passenger vehicle market held strong with 38,393 units sold, an increase of 5,882 units, or 18.1%, compared to the 32,511 new cars sold in the same month last year.
Unfortunately, vehicles exported from South Africa took another knock last month, with export volumes decreasing to 33,879 units – a 6.9% contraction compared to the 36,377 units shipped in June 2025.
