Hatchbacks continue to form the basis of South Africa’s affordable car market, with fan-favourite models accounting for nearly 20% of June’s total vehicle sales.
The model of choice last month was the VW Polo Vivo with 2,395 units, making it the second-best-selling vehicle in the country after the Toyota Hilux.
This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.
The second-most-popular hatchback was the Hyundai Grand i10, which sold 1,627 units in June. This was followed by the Suzuki Swift, which moved 1,388 examples.
Two Toyota models, the Starlet and the Vitz, then came fourth and fifth with 968 and 921 units, respectively.
After this came the locally-made VW Polo with 864 sales, which remains a relatively popular entry, though is not quite as dominant as it was in previous years.
A relative newcomer, the Tata Tiago, came seventh with 514 units, while eighth place went to the Renault Kwid with 505 sales
The Hyundai i20 made its way into 451 new homes last month, and the Suzuki Baleno closed out the top 10 thanks to 355 customers.
In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 9,988 units, representing 18.33% of the 54,482 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.

Note that the Hyundai Grand i10 is sold in both hatchback and sedan formats, but Hyundai does not report body-specific sales figures.
