The Chery Group has no less than six car brands in South Africa, selling everything from entry-level crossovers to electric vehicles and Adventure SUVs.
All of this has happened within the last five years, as Chery relaunched in our market in 2021. Since then, the brand has rapidly grown to the point where it is the sixth best-selling brand in the country.
Chery’s catalogue is exclusively made up of the Tiggo SUV series, which has become very popular with motorists due to its relatively affordable prices.
The entry-level Tiggo 4 Pro, for example, starts at R269,900, making it one of the cheapest crossovers on the market, costing less than even the VW Polo Vivo.
The Tiggo 4 and its facelifted counterpart, the Tiggo Cross, are in fact the second-best-selling passenger cars in the country behind the Vivo.
This success has since prompted Chery to launch additional sub-brands in South Africa to cover different market segments, starting with Omoda.
Omoda, which is marketed as one of Chery’s luxury brands, made its debut in April 2023 with a single crossover, the C5.
The C5 is also relatively affordable despite ostensibly being a premium vehicle, as it currently retails for R349,900, less than a VW Polo.
It went on to become a big hit with consumers, prompting the launch of Chery’s third brand in 2024 – Jaecoo.
Jaecoo is another premium brand like Omoda; however, while Omoda specialises in sleek urban crossovers, Jaecoo offers SUVs with a stronger emphasis on an outdoor lifestyle, such as the J7.
The two carmakers formed the joint brand Omoda & Jaecoo (O&J), which report their sales to the Automotive Business Council as one combined figure.
O&J’s sales are also reported separately from Chery, unlike other brands such as GWM, which include sub-brands like Haval in their sales totals.
This is notable, as O&J has become a major success in its own right, placing 11th on July’s best-sellers list.
The fourth Chery brand, Jetour, also entered South Africa in 2024, though unlike O&J, it elected to do so independently of its parent company.
Jetour launched with two urban SUVs, the Dashing and X70 Plus, which were relatively popular. However, the brand’s sales skyrocketed with the later introduction of the T1 and T2.
The T-badged models are Adventure SUVs that are considerably cheaper than legacy alternatives like the Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest, which instantly made them a smash hit with motorists.
Like O&J, Jetour reports its sales separately, and it managed to place ninth on last month’s best-sellers list.
If you were to combine Chery, O&J, and Jetour’s sales, you’d see that the Chery Group is technically the second-best-selling brand in the country now behind Toyota, surpassing Suzuki, VW, Ford, and Hyundai.
2 more Chery brands entered South Africa in 2026
This still isn’t enough for Chery, evidently, as it has launched two more brands in South Africa this year – Lepas, and iCAUR.
Lepas arrived in March with a single crossover, the L4, which is also positioned as a premium alternative to the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.
A representative for the Chery Group explained to TopAuto that the hierarchy of brands is as follows:
- Omoda & Jaecoo
- Jetour
- Lepas
- Chery
There’s another brand above O&J called Exeed, but this is not available in South Africa. Another new brand, Freelander, was also unveiled earlier this year.
Freelander is a collaboration between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, so it’s safe to say it will also be an upmarket marque, though it remains to be seen if and when it will arrive in South Africa.
The last Chery brand to enter South Africa is iCAUR, which is quite different to its peers, as it specializes in retro-themed SUVs with new-energy-vehicle (NEV) powertrains.
Its first two cars, the V23 and 03T, are battery-electric vehicles, and the company plans to add a third model, the flagship V27, later this year.
