New Volvo XC60 – The competitors at R750,000

Volvo South Africa recently launched a “more affordable” version of its XC60 mid-size SUV.

The range now starts at R750,094 for the XC60 B5 Momentum Front Wheel Drive (FWD) – compared to the R889,498 of before.

What sets this new model apart is mostly the fact that its front-wheel-drive only, whereas the rest of the line-up is all-wheel drive.

Additionally, leather upholstery is an optional extra in the new B5 FWD, whereas this comes as standard in its siblings.

This Volvo is not short of features, however, offering dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver seat, a wireless charger, a reverse camera, all-round parking sensors, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch infotainment system with Google services as standard.

A hands-free tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, automatic LED headlights, lane keep assist, oncoming lane mitigation, hill-descent control, and road-sign recognition are included, too.

Driving the B5 FWD is a 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system paired to an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.

With 183kW and 350Nm, the Volvo sprints to 100km/h in 7 seconds flat – 0.1 seconds slower than the AWD derivatives. The front-wheel-drive setup also means this XC60 boasts the lowest combined fuel rating in the range, at 6.9l/100km.

A cargo capacity of 505 litres in five-seater mode is then on the books, and a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,300kg is supported.

Each XC60 is sold with a  5-year/100,000km warranty and maintenance plan.

At R750,000 you have a choice of popular SUVs in South Africa such as the Toyota Fortuner and VW Tiguan.
