Updated Suzuki Ertiga vs top-end Toyota Rumion

Suzuki has updated its Ertiga MPV series – discontinuing the top-of-the-range GLX model while adding several new features to the mid-range GL to compensate, with this specification now getting new price tag of R312,900.

For a similar price, motorists can also take home the top-spec model of Toyota’s own people carrier – the Rumion TX.

We put these two MPVs side by side to see how the revised Suzuki Ertiga compares with its new features.

Features

Starting with the Suzuki, the updated GL is now fitted with new visual elements such as 15-inch alloy wheels as well as chrome accents on the front grille.

Standard offerings consist of dual-zone manual air-conditioning and ventilated cup holders, as well as newly-added rear parking sensors.

The multifunction steering wheel has functionality for cruise control and volume adjustments, and the automatic spec comes with a hill assist function, too.

Most notable on the updated GL is the addition of a new 7-inch infotainment system with four speakers. This new media centre has support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while also displaying the feed for the new rear-view camera.

Moving to the Toyota, the TX is offered with 15-inch alloy wheels and a chrome grille, similar to its competitor, and the interior is furnished with wood panelling.

Buyers of the top-spec Rumion can further expect a multifunction steering wheel, single-zone automatic air conditioning, a reverse camera, and a six-speaker entertainment centre with smartphone pairing and Toyota Connect support as standard.

As both cars are peopler carriers, the Ertiga and Rumion are also capable of seating up to seven passengers and offer an identical boot capacity of 153 litres, which is increased to 550 litres with the rear-most seats flipped down.

Engine

The Ertiga and Rumion use the same power source, which in this case is a 1.5-litre petrol engine.

This drivetrain allows both MPVs to produce a total of 77kW and 138Nm which is put down to the ground through the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox.

Fuel consumption, meanwhile, is pegged at 6.2l/100km on a combined cycle and each is capable of managing a top speed of 175km/h, too.
