Alfa Romeo working on a new sports car – Everything we know

Alfa Romeo has confirmed that it is working on a new sports car, which is currently expected to make its debut in 2024.

While there have been rumours that the Italian carmaker was developing a new model, none were set in stone, until now.

Company CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato recently gave an official confirmation that Alfa has plans for a new high-performance automobile, though other details are still scarce.

Imparato stated that the car will either be powered by an internal combustion engine or will take the form of a fully-electric vehicle.

Given that an important detail like this is still under consideration suggests that the project is still very much in its infancy, which is further supported by the fact that there are currently no images, spy shots, or official renderings of the new car.

Instead, other automotive sources like Motor1.com have tried their hand at picturing what the upcoming sports car could look like with unofficial renders, based on designs taken from previous vehicles in Alfa Romeo’s history, such as the Disco Volante and 4C.

It’s difficult to say whether Alfa will ultimately go down the petrol or electric route with its new vehicle, given that the brand is beloved by petrolheads who would no doubt like to see at least a V6 powerplant.

However, with Europe’s ban on internal combustion engines fast approaching in the next few years, it’s very likely that electrification will play at least a partial role in the sports car’s development – whether that means it will be made an EV from the start, or if an electric version will be sold further down the line.

Imparato’s statement that the car would be “exclusively” powered by one or the other drivetrain does at least suggest that we can rule out the possibility of a hybrid option.

Alfa Romeo in South Africa

There are currently two Alfas on the market in South Africa – the Giulia and the Stelvio – both of which recently saw an update with new features and styling elements added.

Earlier in 2022, the automaker also launched an ultra-limited edition of the Giulia, coined the GTAm, of which only 10 units were earmarked for local customers.

A third vehicle, the Tonale, was added to the product roster this week as the manufacturer’s second-ever SUV, and it’s exclusively powered by a hybrid drivetrain, becoming Alfa’s first partially-electrified model in the country.

The famous car builder used to sell the sporty Mito and Giulietta hatchbacks locally, too, though these were discontinued not that long ago and can now only be found as pre-owned models.
