Most fuel-efficient bakkies in South Africa

Bakkies continue to be one of South Africa’s best-selling vehicle types, despite the ever-rising cost of ownership.

Diesel prices are currently sitting at R19.81 per litre as of July 2023, which is a notable step down from the sky-high rates that motorists have been paying for the better part of a year, but is nonetheless still going to make a substantial hole in your wallet the next time you refill.

Fortunately, there are 11 different car brands in South Africa that have at least one double cab on sale, the preferred body type for most bakkie buyers, and many of these new-age off-roaders have a claimed fuel consumption that is on par with autos that are more suited to a city environment.

The most fuel-efficient bakkie in the country is the Mazda BT-50, where its most economical model averages 6.6l/100km on a typical cycle – which is not far off the mileage provided by something like the Mazda 2 hatchback.

The Ford Ranger and VW Amarok also have powertrains that deliver a consumption under the 7.0l/100km mark, and Toyota is not far behind with a Hilux that can do 7.1l/100km.
