Cheaper BMW X3 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

BMW has launched a new entry-level model for the popular X3 SUV in South Africa.

The new model, the 20 Pure Design, has a starting price of R1,107,760, making it one of the most affordable options in the X3 stable.

This includes a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.

Engine

The 20 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid technology, which generates a total of 148kW and 310Nm.

This lets the SUV accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds, and reach a top speed of 218km/h.

It is rear-wheel-drive, and gear changes are handled by an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

It also achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.5l/100km thanks to the hybrid assistance.

For comparison, the more expensive 20d models, which use a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel block, generate 145kW and 400Nm.

These units are capable of accelerating from o to 100km/h in 7.7 seconds, while hitting the same top speed of 218km/h.

Using diesel means it also manages a lower average fuel consumption of 6.6l/100km.

Features

The Pure Drive has a similar level of kit to the other X3 variants, which means buyers can expect 19-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tyres, automatic LED headlights, and the brand’s signature illuminated “Iconic Glow” kidney grille.

It also comes with keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, electronically adjustable Sports seats, black or espresso brown Veganza synthetic leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting conveyed through the BMW Interaction Bar, a panoramic glass roof, and aluminium satin-finished cabin accents.

Equipment includes a wireless charging pad, a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo, three-zone climate control, and a 14.9-inch curved dual display for the driver and infotainment systems.

The screen runs on BMW’s latest Operating System 9.0, and features voice commands, onboard navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Additionally, the X3 is fitted with a number of safety and driving aids comprising cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring, blind spot detection, front collision warning, lane departure warning, lane change warning, traffic sign detection, speed limit info, speed limit assist, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, and seven airbags.

It also has a generous 570-litre boot with an electric tailgate, which expands to 1,700 litres when the rear seats are folded.
