New special-edition Mercedes-Benz A-Class goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features
In January, Mercedes-Benz launched two special-edition models, namely the GLA Night Edition and the CLA Night Edition, which have been joined by the highly anticipated A-Class Night Edition.
This cosmetic upgrade sees the A-Class receive a more aggressive, darkened aesthetic, which Mercedes says is designed for those who demand “class for every day”.
“With the Night Edition, we have responded to our customers’ desire for exclusivity and simplified choice,” says Alexandra Boavida, VP Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz South Africa.
“By bundling the AMG-Line’s athletic DNA with the mysterious allure of the Night Package, we’ve created an A-Class that is truly unique.”
Features
The A-Class Night Edition is based on the AMG trimline, but adds an exclusive MANUFAKTUR Alpine Grey solid or Polar White paint job, among other upgrades.
Joining the two paint jobs is the Night Package exterior upgrades, featuring high-gloss black wing mirrors and detailing around the window lines, creating a sharp contrast to the paint job.
Adding to the AMG-Line’s features, the Night Edition includes exclusive 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke design light-alloy wheels from the Mercedes-AMG A35 range.
Completing the exterior features are standard LED rear lights and flat headlamps, which aim to create a “fascinating and emotionally appealing appearance”.
Inside, the A-Class Night Edition’s cabin features a freestanding dual-screen display, which includes a 10.25-inch central touchscreen with the latest generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX).
Styling cues for the car’s interior were taken from aviation, as can be seen in the three turbine-look air vents, which pay homage to the world of flight.
An upgraded steering wheel finished in Nappa leather is fitted as standard, while Mercedes-Benz has added functional features, including a reversing camera, the Mirror Package, and the Parking Package.
The former enhances convenience and safety by adding power-folding exterior mirrors and automatic dimming functionality, and the latter is a suite of advanced driver-assistance features to ease parking.
Performance
Under the hood, the A-Class Night Edition is fitted with the same turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol motor found in the A200 AMG trimline, as well as its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
This powertrain is capable of producing 20kW and 270Nm, allowing a 0-100km/h acceleration of 8.2 seconds, and a top speed of 225km/h.
Its relatively frugal 6.3l/100km fuel consumption allows for a 683km maximum range.
