New Toyota Hilux officially goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features
The next-generation Toyota Hilux has finally gone on sale in South Africa.
The long-awaited follow-up to the country’s best-selling vehicle, the ninth-generation Hilux is now available in seven configurations with prices starting at R658,500.
This includes double-cab and Xtra-cab (extended-cab) body types, though the single-cab units are not available at launch.
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) said the pricing for the single-cab models will be announced in the third quarter of 2026.
“Representing the most significant evolution of the model since the launch of the eighth generation, the new Hilux has been developed to meet the needs of a rapidly changing market while remaining true to the qualities that have made it South Africa’s favourite vehicle,” said TSAM.
Performance
The next-gen Hilux is equipped with Toyota’s proven 2.8-litre turbocharged GD-6 diesel engine, which generates a substantial total of 150kW and 500Nm.
This engine has been applied across the range, meaning that the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and the 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre petrol options have all been dropped.
Additionally, all of the new models feature a six-speed automatic transmission, so there is no manual option at launch.
Some of these options will presumably be added when the single cab models go on sale later this year.
For now, the range is comprised of three trim levels – the SRX, Raider X, and Legend – all of which feature both a rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive setup.
Fuel consumption works out to roughly 7.6l/100km in either case, giving the bakkie a range of 1,053km on its 80-litre tank.
One important detail to note is that the range-topping Legend features mild hybrid (MHEV) technology, including a 48-volt system with a small 8.5kW/65Nm electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and a DC/DC converter to deliver smoother stop-start operation and better acceleration from a standstill.
As far as technical improvements are concerned, TSAM said the new Hilux was developed in response to customer feedback.
The steering, suspension, and mounting systems have all been heavily tweaked to improve the ride quality, particularly on gravel roads.
“New suspension tuning, revised damping characteristics, updated bushings and structural enhancements contribute to improved ride quality, particularly on uneven surfaces,” said the company.
“Electric Power Steering delivers lighter low-speed manoeuvrability, improved steering precision and reduced driver fatigue.”
Cabin noise has also been reduced for a more relaxed driving experience.
Features
Looking at the bakkie’s spec sheet, the base SRX comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, a full-sized steel spare wheel, a shark fin antenna, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED front fog lamps, electric side mirrors, and side steps.
It also has electric windows, a lockable glove box, manually-adjustable fabric seats, a vinyl gear stick, a urethane multifunction steering wheel, manual air conditioning, four speakers, a 12V socket, USB-C ports, an analogue driver display, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Driving and safety aids then include a reverse camera, ABS with brake assist, a limited-slip differential, vehicle stability control, and side, curtain, driver, passenger, and driver knee airbags.
The next option is the Raider X, which comes with 17-inch alloys, a front spoiler, rear LED fog lights, keyless start, silver door handles, dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel and gearstick, eight speakers, a wireless charger, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
The Raider X also has an expanded driver assistance suite with cruise control, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system.
If you want even more, you can look to the top-spec Legend, which adds rear privacy glass, an electrochromatic rearview mirror, an electronic handbrake, leather upholstery, a nine-speaker JBL stereo, a cooled storage box, and an electric driver’s seat.
