New Nissan X-Trail launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Nissan has officially launched the new X-Trail in South Africa, kickstarting a product offensive that will soon add another two models to its local catalogue, the Tekton and Patrol.

The X-Trail is one of the Japanese automaker’s most popular vehicles, selling more than 8 million units globally.

It was first introduced in South Africa in 2001, and has since gone on to sell over 50,000 examples.

This latest version of the SUV is available in three specifications at a starting price of R599,900, and is now available across the brand’s national dealer network.

“This is the first of a series of exciting launches we have planned for South Africa,” said Nissan South Africa managing director Juan Wheeler.

“We are going to follow it up with the Tekton that has just been introduced to the world in India, with even more products before the end of this fiscal year.”

While Nissan recently sold its Navara bakkie factory in Gauteng to the Chinese Chery Group, the carmaker reaffirmed its commitment to our market.

“We remain committed to launching SUVs in Africa, with new model introductions planned for later this year and in 2027,” said Nissan Africa managing director Mohamed Samad.

“The X-Trail defined the mid-size SUV segment when it was first introduced in 2001, and this latest version does all of this while honouring its heritage.”

Engine

The X-Trail has retained its 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which delivers 135kW and 244Nm.

This power is sent to the front wheels via a new-generation continuously variable transmission (CVT). All three variants also have a limited-slip differential for improved control when accelerating or off-roading.

It achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.4l/100km, which gives it a range of close to 750km on a 55-litre fuel tank.

All three versions also have a Drive Mode selector with settings for Eco, Normal, and Sport, which adjust the power delivery, transmission characteristics, steering and throttle feel to prioritize efficiency or performance.

The range-topping Acenta + also features a Terrain Mode selector, allowing drivers to choose between Mud, Snow, or Sand settings for improved traction and performance in slippery conditions.

Features

The 2026 Model Year X-Trail has received a makeover, giving it a sturdier, more prominent road presence, according to the manufacturer.

This includes a new front grille and bumper construction that uses strong horizontal lines to create a wider stance and a “powerful overtaking presence.”

“The lower bumper has been recontoured to match the new look front grille and the detailing in the polycarbonate inserts on the doors,” said Nissan.

Alloy wheels start at 17 inches on the base Visia, which are swapped out for 18-inch rims on the mid-range Acenta and 19-inch ones on the Acenta +.

The Japanese SUV also has two-tier LED headlights and daytime running lights with automatic high-beams and a follow-me-home setting.

The X-Trail now comes standard with keyless access, including Nissan’s patented Walkaway Lock and Approach Unlock feature.

Inside, it has a telescopic multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, a charging pad, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Acenta models also come with a fully-digital driver display, dual-zone climate control, and electric front seats with a heating function. The Acenta + additionally receives a head-up display.

Across the range, the second-row seats can slide, fold forward, and recline. The Acenta + has a third seat row, allowing it to take up to seven occupants.

Driver assistance features include an updated 3D 8-point Around View Monitor with wide-angle exterior shots, providing motorists with a clear 360-degree view at low speeds.

It also has an invisible hood setting and a T-junction view. When parking, the camera switches to a bird’s eye view for easier positioning.

This system also includes moving-object detection that can alert the driver to nearby objects or persons while moving at low speeds.
