Tata Osprey lands in South Africa – Pricing and features

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) has announced the arrival of its new crossover SUV – the Osprey – in the South African market.

Known as the Nexon in its home market, India, the crossover arrived with four distinct derivatives – two Smart+ variants, Creative, and Creative+ – with prices starting from R249,900.

Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for TMPV, explained that while the Osprey name may be new to South Africa, the Nexon has earned the trust of more than 1.1 million customers in India.

“Osprey has been positioned to fit naturally into everyday South African life,” he explained.

“It is equally at home navigating the weekday commute as it is carrying a family away for the weekend, while giving customers access to technology, performance and features they may not expect at this price point.”

Adding to this, TMPV Managing Director Thato Magasa said the brand is excited to welcome the model to the local market as it continues to strengthen its product portfolio.

“We are confident that the Tata Osprey’s distinctive design, advanced technology and strong safety credentials will make it a compelling choice for South African customers,” he said.

Features

All four derivatives measure 3,995mm long and boast 208mm of ground clearance and offer an expansive 382-litre boot despite their compact dimensions.

The entry-level Osprey Smart+ derivatives are fitted with LED headlamps and daytime running lamps, rear parking sensors and 16-inch steel wheels.

Inside, these feature a 4-inch LCD driver display behind a two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and fabric seats – leather upholstery is optional across the range.

Standard safety equipment in the entry-level models includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

Building on the entry-spec offerings, the Creative DCA features a 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system and automatic climate control with rear air vents, alloy wheels and roof rails.  

Driver comforts and convenience features in this derivative include cruise control, a 360-degree surround view camera and a blind view monitor.

At the top of the range, the Creative+ PS DCA adds additional features, including exterior styling with full LED headlamps and connected LED tail lamps.

This model adds an electric panoramic sunroof and a wireless phone charger, while keyless entry and push-button start, front parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system add further convenience.

Engine

All four Osprey derivatives are powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that makes 88kW and 170Nm, while their transmissions set them apart.

The Osprey Smart+ MT is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission, while the Smart+ DCA features a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

All DCA derivatives, including the Creative and Creative +, are fitted with a Smart E-Shifter, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Eco, City and Sport drive modes.

While Tata has yet to confirm local figures for the Osprey, the Nexon boasts fuel consumption of 5.7 to 5.9l/100km, which may translate to our market.
