New GWM Tank 500 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

GWM has officially launched the new Tank 500 in South Africa, expanding its flagship SUV series with a selection of diesel models.

The new models are meant to broaden the Tank’s appeal by catering to motorists who prioritise low-speed torque, towing ability, and long-distance driving.

It is now available in three specifications, and prices start at R849,900.

Engine

Under the hood of the new GWM is a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that develops 170kW and 620Nm.

To put that in perspective, the hybrid (HEV) models launched in 2024 combine a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 255kW and 648Nm.

While the new diesel model’s headline outputs are lower than those of the HEV, its main advantage is its better torque delivery in the low-range.

It can access 385 Nm at just 1,000rpm, making it better off the line, on steep slopes, or when carrying a heavy load.

Power is sent to a part-time four-wheel-drive system via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 7.1l/100km.

The Tank has a towing capacity of 3,500kg, meaning it can support the requirements of owners with caravans, trailers, or work equipment.

Features

As you’d expect from GWM’s flagship Adventure SUV, the new models have a generous spec sheet that starts with seven seats wrapped in leather.

The front seats are electronically adjustable and feature heating, ventilation, and massage functions.

This update also introduces the brand’s latest Coffee OS 3.0 software for the infotainment system, which includes voice commands, navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings.

Safety fittings on the Tank 500 include ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Traction Control, Roll Movement Intervention, Electronic Stability Control, Brake Assist, Hill-Start Assist Control, Hill Descent Control, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring.

Additional driving aids comprise Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Cruise Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Cornering Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Centring Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, and pedestrian and cyclist detection.
