The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and GLE 63 S Coupe high-performance SUVs are now available in South Africa.
The 63 designation is only given to the company’s most prestigious vehicles, and this GLE is no different.
The exterior follows a muscular design that is rugged and elegant at the same time, and the interior has all the latest and greatest features this brand has to offer.
The enlarged air vents, 21-inch wheels, and aggressive bumpers make it obvious that this SUV will go fast.
Up front it receives the AMG-specific panamericana grille with vertical slats, LED headlights with daytime running lights, a power-domed hood, and integrated roof rails.
Flared wheel arches emphasise the aggressive design, and 21-inch wheels with AMG lettering finish off the sporty exterior.
The design elements flows to the interior, too, with AMG-specific interior appointments that create a stylish cabin.
Nappa leather AMG seats headline the interior, and these are complemented with a healthy addition of carbon fibre inserts and contrast stitching.
Furthermore, the multifunction steering wheel is now in the latest, three-spoke style – and aluminium paddle shifters are placed right behind it.
The dash then features the “widescreen cockpit”, comprising two large screens that get the job of handling the SUV’s many features.
There are buttons on the centre console to bring up the AMG-specific features on these displays, with additional switches that control everything from the vehicle’s driving modes, to the traction control, to the optional performance exhaust.
Features are plenty in the GLE, and you would not be surprised to hear about its climate control, navigation, or smartphone mirroring abilities.
Voice control is another feature, where your vehicle responds to “Hey Mercedes”, and it will recognise and understand “practically all commands common in infotainment and vehicle control,” said Mercedes.
Next up comes safety systems, and it is clear from the GLE’s 5-star Euro NCAP that this was kept in high regard.
It gets a 360-degree camera as standard, all-round parking sensors, Urban Guard that will keep your vehicle safe while unattended, and active brake assist.
An optional driving assistance system is available at purchase, enabling:
- Pre-safe Plus
- Traffic sign assist
- Active brake assist
- Active steering assist
- Exit warning function
- Evasive steering assist
- Active blind spot assist
- Active speed limit assist
- Emergency lane function
- Active emergency stop assist
- Active distance assist DISTRONIC
- Active lane keep and change assist

Under the hood of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S lies a 4.0-litre, V8, twin-turbocharged petrol engine with a starter alternator, mated to a 9-speed AMG Speedshift transmission.
The generates 450kW of power, with an additional 16kW derived from the alternator, and 850Nm of torque.
The all-wheel-drive SUV will reach 100km/h in 3.8 seconds regardless of its roofline, and go on to reach an electronically-limited 280km/h thanks to the AMG drivers package.
A comfortable drive will be brought about by the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive damping, a system that keeps the vehicle level regardless of the load on board.
Flipping the switch over to Sport mode makes the suspension lower the body by 10mm, while Trail and Sand modes will see it go up by 55mm.
It will also lower itself by 10mm automatically at speeds of over 120km/h, while a limited slip differential keeps the vehicle sticking to the tar.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S is available in South Africa, and pricing is as follows:
- Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ – R2,885,000
- Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupe – R2,948,000
Along with this you will get a 5-year/100,000km PremiumDrive Maintenance contract.
