Toyota has unveiled the upgraded fourth-generation of the Prius.
The latest hybrid sedan combines “unique, futuristic styling with a practical five-door layout,” said Toyota.
It is classified as a full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) and uses a self-charging powertrain to provide electric energy.
What’s new
Inside the Prius cabin, the infotainment system has been updated to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a high-resolution screen replaces the old display.
Bluetooth, USB, and Aux functionalities remain, while Toyota Connect provides an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot and 15GB of data upon registration.
A luxurious element is then provided by leather seats, and a comprehensive standard specification set includes:
- Reverse camera
- Heads-up display
- Rain-sensing wipers
- Wireless charging pads
- Dual-zone climate control
- Multi-information display
- Seat heaters with electric lumbar support
The exterior sees LED headlights, fog lights, and daytime running lights fitted – while Smart Entry makes getting into the Prius more convenient.
You will also have a choice between eight exterior colours when buying your car, with the newest addition being Platinum Pearl White.
Safety
The Prius now gets the Toyota Safety Sense system as standard.
This enables features such as a pre-crash system, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane trace assist.
The multifunction steering wheel makes it easier to access some of these features, and ABS with traction control and brake assist is included, too.
Power
Powering the Prius is a mixture of electrical components, as well as a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol motor.
The combination provides 90kW of power, and a dedicated EV-mode will let the car operate under full electric power.
Power is sent to the front wheels, and drive is handled by an integrated CVT transmission.
Price
The Toyota Prius 1.8 will be the only trim on sale, and it has a South African price of R566,400.
This includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty, a 6-services/90,000km service plan, and an 8-year/195,000km hybrid battery warranty.
