Affordable Citroen C3 updated for South Africa – New engine, gearbox, and price

Citroen has launched a new range-topping derivative for the C3 crossover in South Africa.

The C3 was first introduced in May 2023 in a single “Feel” specification, which was expanded on in March this year with the introduction of a higher-tier “Max” option.

Now, the carmaker has released a new flagship option for its affordable SUV, which offers a more powerful turbocharged engine and an automatic gearbox, thereby completing the range.

That’s not all, however, as Citroen has also updated the existing roster, adding new features and improving its safety equipment.

The upgrades have resulted in a small bump to the C3’s starting price, which now goes for at least R249,900.

Engine

The new variant is based on the Max trim level but features a much more potent 1.2-litre, turbo-petrol engine.

This powerplant generates a total of 81kW and 205Nm – a 21kW and 90Nm upgrade over its naturally-aspirated counterpart.

The other selling point of the 1.2T Max is that it is the only unit in the series that is equipped with an automatic gearbox.

This takes the form of a six-speed self-shifter, in contrast to the five-speed manual used by the non-turbo C3s.

Owing to the more intense drivetrain, the range-topping Max ends with a higher average fuel consumption of 6.2l/100km versus the other models’ 5.6l/100km.

Features

While the 1.2T Max is the biggest new addition to the C3 family, the Feel and Max have also received attention with an expansion to their spec sheet.

Most important is the fact that every variant now comes standard with ISOFIX child seat anchors and six airbags instead of two, with the automatic entries also benefiting from electronic stability control.

The Max derivatives have been upgraded to automatic air conditioning, and now feature auto-folding side mirrors with integrated indicators, and foldable roof grab handles for passengers.

As a reminder, the crossover is already bundled with items like 14-inch steel wheels, LED daytime running lights, a two-tone roof, a multifunction steering wheel, central locking, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse parking sensors, and ABS with electronic brake-force distribution.

The Max units then add to this with 15-inch alloy rims, fog lights, a rear skid plate, and a reverse camera.

Pricing

The South African pricing for the updated Citroen C3 range is as follows:

This includes a 5-year/100,000km warranty and a 2-year/30,000km service plan.
