The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect tomorrow on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.
The good news is that prices are dropping across the board for petrol and diesel, though the former is seeing a minute decrease.
Both grades of petrol are going down by a paltry 5c per litre, but diesel is thankfully getting a more impactful decrease of 37c per litre.
The lower prices are attributed to an improvement in the rand/US dollar exchange rate and the fluctuating international trading price of oil.
A decrease that could have been a lot bigger
The rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period from 2 May to 29 May 2025.
During this time, the exchange rate improved from R18.83 per dollar to R18.11 per dollar, lowering the cost of importing oil to South Africa.
This led to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Prices on petrol and diesel by 39.34 c/l and 39.80 c/l, respectively.
Similarly, the trading price of Brent Crude oil decreased during the period under review.
On 13 May, a barrel of oil traded for $66.63, but this has since dropped to $63.48 per barrel.
Unfortunately, the lower Basic Fuel Price has been undercut by the government’s decision to raise the General Fuel Levy (GFL) in place of the now-scrapped VAT hike.
The GFL will go up by 16c per litre for petrol, and 15c per litre for diesel once the new adjustments come into effect on 4 June.
Thankfully, the Slate Levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0.00c/l, in line with the provisions of the self-adjusting Slate Levy mechanism.
With all of this in mind, this is how South Africa’s fuel prices will be adjusted for June 2025:
- Petrol 93 – Decrease of 5c a litre
- Petrol 95 – Decrease of 5c a litre
- Diesel 0.05% – Decrease of 37c a litre
- Diesel 0.005% – Decrease of 37c a litre
The table below indicates how the official fuel price adjustments for June will reflect at the pump:
Fuel type | Inland price | Coastal price |
---|---|---|
Petrol 93 | R21.24 | R20.45 |
Petrol 95 | R21.35 | R20.52 |
Diesel 0.05% | R18.53 | R17.70 |
Diesel 0.005% | R18.57 | R17.81 |
