Suzuki achieved record-breaking sales in South Africa in August 2025.
According to the latest report from the Automotive Business Council, Suzuki was able to sell a grand total of 6,534 new passenger and light commercial vehicles – its best figure to date.
The Japanese carmaker’s previous record was set in January when it told 6,399 units – 135 less than the new tally.
These consistently high figures have helped to secure Suzuki’s position as the second-best-selling car brand in the country behind Toyota.
Toyota is still well ahead of the curve with 13,276 sales, but Suzuki’s 6,534 units give it a comfortable lead over VW in third place, which sold 5,521 cars last month.
It wasn’t that long ago that Volkswagen was the undisputed second-best seller in South Africa, but Suzuki’s emphasis on affordable models has clearly resonated with consumers at a time when many households are downsizing.
The automaker reported that dealer sales accounted for 4,823 of last month’s purchases, while the remaining 1,711 units were scooped up by rental companies, corporate fleets, and the the government.
Unsurprisingly, the affordable Swift hatchback proved to be the most popular option, accounting for an incredible 2,101 sales.
This means that one in three Suzuki models sold in South Africa is a Swift, illustrating just how important the badge is to the brand’s success.
The Swift sold so well, in fact, that it was the third best-selling passenger car after the Toyota Corolla Cross and VW Polo Vivo.
Other hot picks included the Fronx crossover, which sold 1,210 units, and the Eritga people carrier with 1,055 units.
The Baleno hatchback moved 500 examples, and the entry-level S-Presso hatch sold 433 units.
The fan-favourite Jimny 4×4 also had a good run this August with 326 units making their way to new homes.
“What an incredible way to start the month,” said Henno Havenga, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa.
“Reaching this new overall sales milestone is a humbling yet proud moment for everyone involved here at Suzuki Auto South Africa.
“Spring is a season of growth and renewal, and this achievement gives us fresh energy as we head into the final months of 2025.
“This record inspires us to keep building momentum and delivering vehicles that meet the needs of South African drivers.”
A big event on the horizon

Suzuki has two big events planned this month with the return of the annual Jimny Gathering and the second-ever Safari Town Festival.
The Jimny Gathering will take place from 25 to 28 September at the Louvain Guest Farm in the Outeniqua Mountains, allowing owners to take their vehicles around a series of picturesque 4×4 tracks.
Coinciding with the gathering is the Safari Town Festival, which is making a return in response to popular demand.
The event is open to everyone – not just Suzuki owners – and promises a fun-filled weekend with live entertainment and a wide variety of food and beverage vendors.
Suzuki also plans to set a new Guinness World Record at the festival – a feat it achieved at the first event held in 2023.
“It’s happening – we’re going for another Guinness World Record,” said Jimny Gathering MC, South African comedian and proud Jimny owner Schalk Bezuidenhout.
“This time, for the most cars to close their doors at the exact same time. Ja, you heard me – a synchronized Jimny door slam! So polish your hinges, fill your tank, and come join the action.”
To qualify as an official record, Guinness requires a minimum of 250 vehicles with at least one door on each participating model closed within five seconds of the starting signal.
“We believe the coordinated and simultaneous closing of the doors will be a fun and exciting spectacle to witness – and one that will look fantastic across various social media platforms,” said Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager at Suzuki Auto South Africa.
“Our first record at the inaugural Jimny Gathering in Clarens proved massively popular. It felt only fitting to try for another at this year’s event. In 2023, almost 800 Jimny, LJ, SJ and Samurai models from all over South Africa took part.”
“We’re expecting to beat that number when we line up for the final countdown at Louvain Guest Farm on 27 September. Hopefully everything goes according to plan and we can see the Jimny chalk up another world record.”
