BYD updates 90,000 cars over safety risk

BYD will push a software update to almost 90,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles in China after the national regulator said manufacturing defects in battery packs pose safety risks.

The action involves a total of 88,981 Qin Plus DM-i sedans produced between January 2021 and September 2023, according to a statement posted by the State Administration for Market Regulation on Friday.

It was initiated after Chinese authorities launched an investigation into the matter.

The defect relates to consistency issues within the battery packs that occurred during production, which may lead to limited power output.

In extreme cases, the EVs may be unable to operate in pure electric mode.

BYD will deploy an over-the-air update for affected vehicles remotely and monitor the system for anomalies.

A warning light in the cars will alert the driver when a fault is detected, and BYD will then replace the battery pack free of charge.

The Qin Plus DM-i is one of BYD’s best-selling models. The number of vehicles affected by the recall is around 20% of BYD’s total sales in the month of October.
