Major international car brand opens massive new office and distribution centre in South Africa

Following its massive surge in popularity in the local market, Suzuki Auto South Africa has moved into its massive new head office and distribution centre at Longlake Logistics Park in Gauteng.

This move follows years of sustained growth in our market, with Suzuki recording 18 consecutive years of sales growth, establishing the Japanese automaker as one of the country’s biggest car brands.

According to Suzuki, which is now the country’s second-biggest carmaker, the move marks an important milestone in its continued growth in South Africa.

It added that the relocation from its previous headquarters at Linbro Business Park provides the brand with additional space and infrastructure to serve its growing operations and dealer network.

The facility combines Suzuki Auto South Africa’s head office and distribution operations.

This includes office, warehousing, training and support facilities designed to operate more efficiently and serve its expanding network across South Africa.

Looking ahead, the carmaker’s local arm explained that the move will allow it to expand further and create greater capacity in the future.

Teruo Katakawa, Managing Director of Suzuki Auto South Africa, said Suzuki is pleased to have completed the move into its new headquarters.

He added that it represents an important investment in Suzuki Auto South Africa and its continued progress in this market.

“The additional space and infrastructure will support our operations today while providing capacity for future growth,” said Katakawa.

“As our business and dealer network continue to expand, it is important that we have the right infrastructure in place to support our teams, our dealers and ultimately our customers across South Africa.”

“Here’s to new roots, higher goals and greater achievements,” he concluded.

Suzuki outselling the biggest names in South Africa

The upscaling of the Japanese carmaker’s operations makes sense considering the popularity of its vehicles in the local market.

During its 18 years of uninterrupted local growth, Suzuki has overtaken all but one of South Africa’s established carmakers, namely Toyota, with whom it shares platforms for entry-level models.

While Toyota remains the undisputed overall market leader, the battle for second place regularly pits Suzuki against VW, with the former regularly winning out against its German competitor.

Data from the Automotive Business Council (Naamsa) reveals a highly competitive battle for the number 2 manufacturer spot in South Africa, which has consistently gone to Suzuki since the start of last year.

That said, VW recorded wins against the Japanese giant, clinching a narrow victory of just 53 units in December last year with 5,014 sales compared to Suzuki’s 4,961.

In March this year, the German badge repeated the trick, but this time by a healthier 527-unit margin, recording 5,574 units sold, while Suzuki managed 5,047 in the same month.

However, since then, VW has been left well behind by Suzuki, whose budget offerings have set it apart from many rivals as it capitalises on South Africa’s budget-conscious, yet demanding market.

It did so for the first time early in 2024, when Suzuki claimed the title of the country’s second-biggest manufacturer from VW, cementing itself as a local auto giant months later.

When the Japanese carmaker overtook its German rival for the first time, the brand’s Sales and Marketing GM, Henno Havenga, said its customers were looking to escape the pinch of higher vehicle ownership costs.

“Our experience shows that those who do purchase a new car are looking for the best possible price and lowest running cost, and that has definitely favoured Suzuki Auto’s refreshed range of vehicles,” he said.

Today, Suzuki sells 13 distinct models in South Africa in nearly every market segment, including entry-level hatchbacks, an adventure SUV, and full-sized family cars.
