Toyota’s incredible sales in 2021

Toyota ended 2021 by selling a total of 117,659 new vehicles in South Africa during the year, taking a 25.4% market share.

This means one in every four new vehicles sold in South Africa during last year was a Toyota.

This also marks the 42nd year of Toyota being the best-selling brand in the country, it said.

The last time Toyota registered a 25% market share was in 2003, followed by many years just below the 20% mark.

“Worthy of mention, however, is that for the past five years, Toyota has been punching above a 20% share,” said Toyota South Africa.

Best-selling cars

Instrumental in Toyota’s role as the leading brand is none other than the Hilux, selling a total of 36,085 units in 2021.

This figure alone is more than what the majority of brands in South Africa sold in total.

“Hiace also continued its supremacy as the ‘people mover’ of choice, with a total of 15,699 models sold,” said the company.

Including the Dyna and Land Cruiser bakkie, the four units assured a light commercial vehicle market share of 42.2% for Toyota at the end of last year.

Passenger cars

Along with the impressive commercial vehicle share, Toyota’s passenger vehicle market share increased noticeably in 2021.

“Toyota’s market share of 19.2% in the passenger segment is the highest in the last 12 years – matching a similar figure in 2018 – and comes in the wake of two stellar performances by the Corolla Cross in November and December,” said Toyota.

Other notable models include the Starlet hatchback and Urban Cruiser crossover, accounting for 12,103 units and 8,899 units in 2021, respectively.

Toyota’s truck division – which includes Hino – posted a market share of 25.1% in the medium commercial vehicle segment, and 5.5% in the heavy commercial vehicle segment.

The automaker added that its parts supply arm distributed over 16 million items to domestic dealers in 2021, while close to four million items were exported.

December 2021

Toyota had a strong performance in December 2021 in particular, leading in both passenger car and light commercial vehicle segments for the second month in a row.

The brand sold a total of 9,580 new units during the month.

  • Toyota Hilux – 2,426 units
  • Toyota Corolla Cross – 1,752 units

  • Hino 300-Series – 150 units
