Toyota had a massive month in January 2022, improving its sales month-on-month by 2,900 units to a total of 12,480 units.
As a result, it comfortably extended its lead as the best-selling vehicle brand in South Africa.
These statistics were revealed in Naamsa’s latest New Vehicle Sales report.
The numbers
A total of 41,382 new vehicles were sold in South Africa in January 2022, reflecting a 6,743-unit (19.5%) increase compared to January 2021.
The local passenger car market saw a 26.6% gain, the light commercial vehicle segment – which includes bakkies and mini-buses – a 3.8% gain, the medium-truck segment a 4.3% decline, and the heavy-truck segment a 9.6% gain in sales year-on-year.
Out of the total reported new vehicle sales, an estimated 84.2% represented dealer sales, 12.1% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 2.4% represented sales to the government, and 1.3% represented sales to industry corporate fleets.
Best-selling brands
Compared to December 2021, many automakers in South Africa saw a rise in sales.
Following Toyota and VW in first and second place, respectively, Suzuki sits in third in January 2022.
Hyundai now sits in fourth, after being in third the previous month.
Haval had a stellar performance in January by jumping to fifth place, after being in 10th in both November and December 2021.
Sixth place in January is then occupied by Renault, which stood in eighth the month before, while seventh place is taken up by Nissan, which placed fourth the month before.
Ford sits in eighth in January, Kia in ninth, and Isuzu in 10th, each brand moving down the list by at least one spot.
