The Toyota Hilux retained its place as the best-selling bakkie in South Africa in January 2022, with 2,803 units moved.
This is made even more impressive when you consider that the Hilux alone sold more units during the month than other brands sold in total – including Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, Haval, Isuzu, and Renault.
Following the Toyota, the Isuzu D-Max is the second best-selling bakkie in the country – accounting for 1,141 out of the 1,433 total units sold by the manufacturer in January.
In third place for January sits the Mahindra Pik Up with 618 units sold locally.
Thanks to the Pik Up’s outstanding performance, Mahindra hit an all-time sales record of 1,010 units in South Africa – which reflects a 77% increase over the same month in 2021.
The Ford Ranger, on the other hand, has been experiencing a slowdown in sales since the next-gen Ranger was unveiled in November 2021 – with this bakkie now sitting in fourth place with 608 units sold in January.
This is almost half of the 1,100-plus sales the Ranger regularly used to pull.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Nissan Hardbody was the bakkie with the least sales in January in South Africa – at 7 units sold – followed by the Mazda BT-50 with 20 units, and the Mitsubishi Triton with 25 units.
