Everything making the updated Toyota Supra better than before

A new and enhanced version of the Toyota Supra is in the works from Gazoo Racing (GR), and is expected to make its first appearance in Japan in the third quarter of 2022.

According to Toyota, the Supra has been a popular choice for enthusiasts since its first appearance in 1978 – thanks to its rear-wheel-drive and front-mounted, in-line, six-cylinder engine.

The current GR Supra is powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-engine which produces 250kW and 500Nm.

Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes just 4.3 seconds, and the Supra boasts a top speed of 250km/h.

Kicking it up a notch

The revised Supra has received several enhancements, starting with the steering and suspension.

New adaptive variable suspension and fine-tuned shock absorbers are included for improved ride comfort and roll balance, and the stabilizer bushings have been modified to improve the initial steering response.

Both of these changes are complemented by a reworked chassis, giving the car much better steering and handling overall.

Furthermore, the RZ trim level adds a host of optional features, the most notable of which is a manual gearbox.

The current Supra uses an eight-speed automatic transmission, but the coming RZ model will offer a six-speed manual – an inclusion made due to popular demand and expectation from consumers, said Toyota.

Also included with the RZ are 19-inch forged alloy wheels, which have a weight reduction of 1.2kg per wheel, as well as exclusive styling choices in the form of iridescent grey metallic and sapphire blue metallic paint schemes, and a tan interior.

Finally, the RZ and SR-Z trim levels will feature an improved sound system courtesy of JBL.

Supra in South Africa

The revamped Toyota GR Supra will make its local debut at the South African Festival of Motoring in late August.

Both manual and automatic versions will be offered, and customers will be able to place orders from May.

The official pricing will be announced at launch, but as a reference, the current model’s price starts at R1,111,000.
