New Eleksa Pony pricing – South Africa’s first electric bakkie

South Africa will soon be receiving its very first battery-electric bakkie – the new Eleksa Pony.

Eleksa is the same company that brought us the CityBug, the small hatchback that last year claimed the top spot as the country’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) by a significant margin. The CityBug was available for R230,000, making it half a million rand cheaper than the runner-up at the time, the Mini Cooper SE.

Unfortunately, the hatchback is no longer listed on the company’s website, but South Africans can instead look forward to the new Pony.

South Africa’s first electric bakkie

The Pony is a compact single-cab bakkie that is around one metre shorter and around 250mm narrower than the best-selling Nissan NP200.

The light commercial vehicle features a 5kW AC motor and a 7.2kWh lithium-ion battery, which work together to create a driving range of between 90 to 110 kilometres, similar to what the CityBug was capable of.

It also has a top speed of 70km/h, and charging is expected to take anywhere from three to seven hours using a 220V socket.

As for its practical aspects, the load box measures 1,280mm in length, 1,430mm in width, and 380mm in height, and has a carrying capacity of 300 to 500kg. Buyers additionally have the option to equip a rear load box for protecting valuable cargo.

The bakkie also boasts a relatively high ground clearance of 150mm, thanks in part to the addition of 12-inch alloy wheels, and the cabin is fitted with air conditioning, electric windows, as well as other “high-quality features.”

The official pricing for the Eleksa Pony is as follows:

  • Eleksa Pony – R386,980
  • Eleksa Pony with optional load box – R426,314

Interested parties can now pre-order the Pony by visiting Eleksa’s official website. No details have been announced regarding the bakkie’s delivery dates so far.
