Suzuki has officially unveiled the long-awaited five-door version of the Jimny on local soil, which will be on display at this year’s Festival of Motoring in Gauteng and is scheduled to go on sale before the end of the year.
The larger version of the popular SUV was first revealed all the way back in January, when the company confirmed that it would see a South African introduction, but that no launch date had been set.
The automaker later announced that two other vehicles would go on sale before we would receive the new Jimny – a statement that has now been fulfilled with the arrival of the Fronx and the XL6.
What to expect
Beyond its two extra doors, the incoming Jimny shows few deviations from the popular model already on sale here.
It is 360mm longer than the three-door, putting at a length of 3,985mm. It also boasts a wheelbase that is 340mm longer at 2,590mm.
Other than that, the two vehicles share identical dimensions, meaning it has a width of 1,645mm, a height of 1,670mm, and a ground clearance of 210mm.
The five-door will utilize the same 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine as its sibling, too, which is capable of generating 75kW and 130Nm.
This connects to the AllGrip all-wheel-drive system via either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. In the three-door, this setup lends a fuel consumption of between 6.3-6.8l/100km, but it may be higher in the five-door due to its larger footprint.
The equipment sheet of the newcomer will also be similar to the current line-up, with the notable exception of a larger 9.0-inch infotainment screen adorning the dashboard.
This means customers can expect items like 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, cruise control, hill assist, a multifunction leather steering wheel, automatic climate control, smartphone pairing, and fabric upholstery for the car’s five seats.
The three-door Suzuki is currently offered in GL and GLX trim levels, with prices starting at R373,900, so expect the larger model to retail for more than this.
The final details surrounding the five-door Jimny, including its pricing, spec sheet, and model range, will be revealed closer to its launch date later this year.
