Volkswagen recently unveiled the latest generation of the Transporter range, called the T6.1.

The range consists of the Pick Up, Panel Van, Crew Bus, Kombi, Caravelle, and California models.

The only models that have since been made available for purchase in South Africa are the Kombi and Caravelle, which start at R725,900 and R1,166,600 respectively.

T6.1 highlights

The T6.1 range has received a significant upgrade internally, with minor exterior changes.

The most obvious way to know which generation you’re looking at will be to check the front.

All the design elements below the bonnet are new and the grille has been enlarged to form a single unit with the bumper.

Every trim line will have two chrome-plated cross-bars that connect the lights to the radiator grille, too, and these are extended into the headlight housings.

Six newly-designed wheels, six new exterior colours, and seven new two-tone finishes then round off the new exterior updates to the range.

Below the hood, a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine is fitted to every variant, and customers will have a choice between a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG transmission.

This unit will produce between 81kW and 146kW of power, depending on the chosen specification.

This 6.1 range is also fitted with a new, digital instrument panel.

The panel features the Composition Media infotainment display for the lower trims, while the Caravelle and California specs gets the Discover Pro Media system.

As part of its promotional campaign for the new range, VW South Africa has released new photos of the Kombi 6.1 – which you can find below.
