At least 12 different cars have been discontinued in South Africa in 2024 thus far.
While the year has seen the introduction of several new models, others have been pulled from showrooms for various reasons ranging from the arrival of updated options to cost concerns.
Citroen is revamping its entire line-up in South Africa, moving away from the old vehicles imported from Europe to new ones sourced from India.
The result is that the old European C3 and C3 Aircross have been swapped out for Indian models that have the same names but very different specifications.
Similarly, the Honda WR-X has been dropped to make way for the Elevate, while the Mahindra XUV 3XO took over from the XUV300.
Meanwhile, VW has ended production of the entry-level Amarok bakkie, and other entries like the Hyundai Kona, Nissan Qashqai, Jeep Renegade, Mazda BT-50, and Toyota C-HR were mostly cut due to dwindling sales.
One notable exception to this trend was the Nissan NP200. The compact bakkie was selling incredibly well prior to its cancellation this year, but Nissan still pulled the plug owing to its ageing engineering.
Finally, the Suzuki Vitara was taken away as the manufacturer believes its SUV catalogue is well-covered by newer models like the Fronx and Grand Vitara.
