The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect tomorrow on Wednesday, 6 August 2025.
The good news is that petrol users can expect a small reduction of 28c per litre.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for diesel, which is going up by at least 63c per litre.
What you’re paying for fuel this month
The global oil price saw a strong recovery this July, following a period of political instability in June.
A barrel of Brent Crude oil decreased slightly from 69.36 dollars to 69.06 dollars during the period under review.
The marginally better price is mainly due to OPEC nations electing to increase production.
Unfortunately, this positive trend was largely undermined by the cautious market sentiment brought on by the United States’ new tariffs, which were confirmed at the start of August.
This led to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) of petrol by 23.49c per litre, and a higher contribution to the BFP of 69.94c per litre.
Over the same period, the rand proved to be resilient in the face of uncertain market conditions, appreciating slightly from R17.84 per dollar to R17.76 per dollar
This led to a lower contribution to the BFP of 4.00c and 5.00c per litre across all fuel types.
In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, the Slate Levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0.00 c/l with effect from 6 August 2025.
Based on these factors, this is how South Africa’s fuel prices are being adjusted for August 2025:
- Petrol 93 – Decrease of 28c per litre
- Petrol 95 – Decrease of 28c per litre
- Diesel 0.05% – Increase of 65c per litre
- Diesel 0.005% – Increase of 63c per litre
The table below indicates how the official fuel price adjustments for August will reflect at the pump:
| Fuel type | Inland price | Coastal price |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol 93 | R21.51 | R20.70 |
| Petrol 95 | R21.59 | R20.76 |
| Diesel 0.05% | R20.00 | R19.17 |
| Diesel 0.005% | R20.04 | R19.28 |
