The VW Polo Vivo is the model of choice for motorists shopping on a budget in South Africa.
The small hatchback sold a staggering 2,862 units in November, making it the most popular passenger car in the country. This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.
It’s a sure sign that affordability as important as ever when it comes to car sales, as sub-R300,000 models accounted for a significant portion of the industry’s success last month.
Other top picks included the Suzuki Swift, which sold 2,364 units, and the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, which moved 1,838.
Fourth place in the budget category went to the Toyota Starlet with 1,619 sales, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 in fifth with 1,486 units.
Looking beyond the top five, the Suzuki Fronx had a great month with 1,176 purchases, and Toyota sent 899 Vitz units out the showroom door.
Nissan’s Magnite crossover was another solid performer with 815 sales earning it the eighth spot, and the Kia Sonet came ninth with 778 units.
The final slot in the top 10 went to the Suzuki Baleno with 662 units, knocking the Mahindra XUV 3X0 out of the league in the process.
Together, these 10 vehicles sold a combined 14,459 units, representing 26.33% of the 54,896 cars sold over the last 30 days.
Notably, the Vivo and the Swift sold a combined 5,226 units, meaning roughly 1 in 10 cars purchased in South Africa is one of these two models.
