10 new SUVs you can buy for the price of a used Toyota Fortuner

A used Toyota Fortuner costs nearly half a million rand in South Africa, but there are several new SUVs that you can purchase for a similar amount.

AutoTrader recently published its March 2026 sales data, revealing that 708 people bought a second-hand Fortuner.

The Toyota is a popular car because it serves as both a capable Adventure SUV and an everyday family car, making it ideal for many South African households.

The downside is that it is quite expensive these days, as a new model retails for anywhere from R685,900 to R1,009,000.

As a result, many consumers have turned to the pre-owned market in search of a more affordable option, but there is a trade-off.

According to AutoTrader, the average price of a used Fortuner is R490,114.

These units also tend to be at least seven years old with 109,723km on the odometer.

The Fortuner is sold with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 90,000km service plan, so both of these will likely have expired by the time you buy a used model.

With that in mind, it’s worth looking at the new-car market to see what can be bought for a similar price with no mileage and full after-sale support.

New for the price of used

Below is a list of new cars that have a similar price to the average cost of a second-hand Toyota Fortuner in South Africa.

Note that the Suzuki Jimny only has four seats, so while it is an excellent off-roader, it may not be suitable for your needs if you’re looking for a family car.
