New Mitsubishi bakkies coming to South Africa

Mitsubishi has announced that it will update its Triton bakkie range for South Africa, adding new derivatives with an all-new engine.

The existing models will also be updated with additional features and new visual elements.

“Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) is looking forward to launching an updated Triton range which will also be expanded with the addition of an exciting Triton Bi-Turbo derivative in the coming months.”

This is according to Lerato Nonyane, General Manager: Product & Marketing at MMSA.

“The updates to the 2026 Triton range will ensure that this model continues to perfectly cater for the needs of South African bakkie customers while remaining competitive in a rapidly evolving bakkie market.”

What’s in store

The current-generation Triton was launched in South Africa in late 2024.

It is currently available with a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine, though the output varies, depending on the model.

The base units produce 81kW and 200Nm, while the higher-end models can generate up to 135kW and 430Nm.

The new Bi-Turbo engine, meanwhile, will raise the bakkie’s output even further to 150kW and 470Nm.

This option will be exclusively paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel-drive system.

The new Mitsubishi is also getting a number of sporty visuals and practical enhancements, including roof rails, a styling bar, an assisted tailgate, and heated door mirrors.

Furthermore, the Bi-Turbo has an expanded driver assistance suite, including adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, forward collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a multi-around monitor.

Attention has been given to the mid-range GLS, too, as the various chrome elements will be replaced with new blacked-out accents.

This includes the fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, rear gate handle, front and rear bumpers, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Mitsubishi has not confirmed when we will receive the updated Triton range in South Africa, merely stating the full spec sheet will be shared in the coming weeks.
