New petrol VW Amarok bakkie in South Africa – Pricing revealed

The pricing for the new petrol version of the VW Amarok Aventura has been uncovered ahead of its imminent launch in South Africa.

According to our trusty sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists, the new 2.3TSI iteration of Volkswagen’s flagship bakkie will cost R1,178,900 when it goes on sale locally.

This makes it the third most expensive derivative in the lineup, only falling behind the 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel Aventura and PanAmericana.

This is the second model in the Amarok family to receive a petrol engine, following the launch of the TSI PanAmericana one year prior.

Petrol bakkies have been gaining popularity over the last few years, particularly in the premium segment, where buyers prefer something with a smoother drive over fuel consumption or torque stats.

Engine

As a reminder, the current-gen Amarok shares a platform with the Ford Ranger, as both vehicles are produced at the Blue Oval’s factory in Gauteng.

Because of this, the new VW uses a Ford-sourced 2.3-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol plant, which generates a total of 222kW and 452Nm.

It has a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, and gear changes are handled by a 10-speed automatic shifter.

Fuel consumption works out to 9.7l/100km, which is higher than the diesel V6 with its economy stat of 8.4l/100km.

On the other hand, the petrol Amarok can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds, which is relatively fast for a double-cab bakkie.

Features

Since the Aventura is the highest trim level available on the Amarok, you can expect plenty of features.

For starters, the pickup comes with IQ.Light LED headlights, daytime running lights, 21-inch alloy rims, an electric roller cover, premium floor carpets, and chrome finishes on the mirrors, door handles, and side steps.

Inside, it has a leather multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry and start, a wireless charger, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, 10-way electric and heated front seats, an eight-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, a 12-inch digital driver display, and a 12-inch vertical infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Assistance functions on the high-end high-rider include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver-fatigue detection, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and Park Assist.
