The most popular used bakkies, SUVs, hatchbacks, and sedans in South Africa
The average pre-owned Toyota Fortuner sold in South Africa goes for around R466,000, has 120,000km on the odometer, and is seven years old.
This is according to sales data published by AutoTrader highlighting the most popular used cars on the market from November 2025.
November is a particularly busy month for the platform as several dealerships offer Black Friday promotions on vehicles.
With this in mind, AutoTrader is now running a Black November promotion, with over 440 deals on cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and leisure rides.
“Four days can be a tight window if you’re fitting viewings and test drives around work,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.
“A month gives buyers more time to see the cars they’re considering and compare the offers. We want people to feel comfortable with the car they choose as well as the price they pay.”
The company has therefore published sales data from November 2025 to illustrate which cars are most popular over this period, and what people typically pay for them.
“For buyers looking to buy their next vehicle, search data from last November offers valuable insight,” said AutoTrader.
“Data from November 2025 shows a wide spectrum of demand, spanning everything from a R207,000 Suzuki Swift to a R1.3 million Porsche Cayenne.”
It noted that average listing data highlights how vehicle mileage and age can vary within similar price brackets.
What’s popular
Volkswagen dominates the hatchback scene, with the Polo Vivo, Polo, and Golf all being top search results.
However, the Suzuki Swift has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, leading to a corresponding spike in searches, and the BMW 1 Series still sees a lot of interest from buyers looking at the entry point to BMW ownership.
As for SUVs, the Toyota Fortuner is the most-sought-after entry, but luxury options like the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X3, and BMW X5 also received millions of searches.
These units tended to be fairly old at seven years or more, with anywhere from 70,000km to 120,000km on the clock.
Bakkies are a more straightforward affair, as the big three of the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max are all featured in the top five, along with the VW Amarok and Toyota Land Cruiser 79.
Sedans, in contrast, are a mixed bag, as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class are still highly desirable, though everyday options like the VW Polo sedan and Toyota Corolla are also big sellers, with a lot of interest presumably coming from the e-hailing industry.
