VW has shown off the first full-body photos of its next-gen Amarok, with the bakkie wrapped in black-and-white camouflage that does not leave too much to the imagination.
Alongside these images, the automaker revealed how the exterior of the Amarok has grown and changed, as well as hinted at what we can expect in terms of features and equipment.
What’s new
From a design standpoint, the new VW Amarok measures 100mm longer than its predecessor at 5,350mm, with a wheelbase that has grown by 175mm to 3,270mm.
The VW is based on the new Ford Ranger and the design is, therefore, a departure from the previous squared-off look to achieve a sportier aesthetic.
The new front section sees horizontal grille crossbars offset by narrower LED headlights, with the lower section of the grille merging into an “X-shaped design”.
The top of the wheel arches retained the signature almost-horizontal line of the previous model, and up to 21-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres continue the fresh look.
At the back, revisions further include a wide tailgate with an embossed Amarok logo.
The result of the larger body is a more spacious cabin, and the increase in wheelbase brings shorter bodywork overhangs that improve off-road capability, said the manufacturer.
“The off-road capabilities of the new Amarok are further perfected by a significantly greater fording depth for driving through waters than its predecessor,” said VW.
Under the hood, there will be a variety of drivetrains on offer comprising one petrol and up to four diesels, depending on the market.
The capacities range from two to three litres and four to six cylinders, and span both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
This gives the next-gen Amarok an increased maximum payload capacity of 1,200kg and a maximum braked towing capacity of up to 3,500kg.
Specifications
The new VW Amarok will launch in five specifications namely Standard, Life, Style, PanAmericana, and Aventura – depending on the market.
PanAmericana enhances the bakkie’s “off-road character” whereas Aventura is more on-road focused, said the manufacturer.
The range will be equipped with a digital cockpit, tablet-style infotainment system, and all-round LED lights, while a wide variety of extras will also be offered.
Buyers of the new Amarok will optionally be able to get IQ.Light LED Matrix headlights, an “exclusive sound system”, leather-look surfaces, and 10-way powered front-seat adjustment.
“Enhanced safety, meanwhile, is provided by more than 30 driver assist systems, over 20 of which are completely new to the Amarok,” said VW.
Launch
“The new Amarok will launch at the end of 2022 in the first few countries with double cab and four doors, and in some individual markets with a two-door single cab,” said VW.
The bakkie will be built at the Ford Silverton Assembly Plant alongside the next-gen Ford Ranger and Everest.
