Every VW on sale in South Africa right now – And which ones are due for an update

VW is one of South Africa’s top-selling manufacturers, thanks in large part to its varied selection of vehicles that are kept up-to-date with the addition of new models based on customer feedback.

That being said, there are a few cars in its current catalogue that are due for an update.

There are two models that have not received any major changes since 2018, and one which has been untouched since 2019.

The Polo Vivo and Touareg are the two oldest-serving units in Volkswagen’s current roster, but the latter is getting a facelift in the third quarter of this year.

Similarly, the T-Cross was introduced to South Africa in 2019, but it, too, will be overhauled in the second half of 2024.

This means the Polo Vivo is the oldest model in the country with no update in sight, though it should be noted that the flagship GT units were touched up in April 2023.

Another notable entry is the Tiguan, one of the nation’s best-selling midsize SUVs which was last visited in 2021 (not including the Tiguan R), and is being replaced by the new generation this next quarter.

The Golf, meanwhile, is only sold in its high-octane GTI and R specifications these days, and the eighth generation launched in 2021 is expected to be the last, save for one last “8.5 gen” spin-off, as the company pivots to electric vehicles.

The rest of the carmaker’s brochure is quite up-to-date, as 2022 was a busy year with the new Caddy, Polo, Polo Sedan, Taigo, T-Roc, and Tiguan Allspace.

The newest VW in South Africa, meanwhile, is the second-gen Amarok bakkie, which is locally produced alongside the Ford Ranger in Pretoria.

Keeping up-to-date

Below is a list of every VW in South Africa, including the last time the vehicle was updated.

This does not include the introduction of additional models on the same platform, such as the high-performance R units for the Tiguan and Golf that were added past the initial launch of their respective series.
