Toyota is killing it in South Africa

Toyota continues to dominate the South African car market, racking up impressive sales figures each month.

The Japanese automaker recently announced that it achieved a staggering 24.7% market share in July 2025, meaning that one in every four new cars sold in Mzansi is a Toyota.

What’s more, the company revealed that it broke a new record thanks to the ever-popular Hilux.

The bakkie sold an impressive 3,120 units last month, which the manufacturer claims is a record-breaking performance for the Hilux.

“Although the current automotive landscape remains challenging, it is remarkable to witness our brand’s consistent growth. For Toyota South Africa, our brand promise is premised on providing mobility for all,” said Leon Theron, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.

“Equally, we are grateful to all our value chain partners who continue to play an active role in ensuring we maintain our market share.”

The company expects sales to improve even further as the year progresses, thanks in part to the South African Reserve Bank’s decision to reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points, leading to better interest rates for consumers buying new vehicles.

“The further reduction of the repo rate is much welcomed relief – this will enable us to continue to serve many of our customers who trust and rely on our brands to move them forward.”

The country’s top brand

Toyota’s 24.7% market share is even more impressive when you consider that there are more than 50 different carmakers in South Africa.

While brands like Suzuki and VW are also very popular, there’s no denying that Toyota is the number one pick for many consumers.

In July, Toyota sold a grand total of 12,694 units while the runner-up, Suzuki, sold 6,257 units.

In other words, Toyota sold twice as many cars as the second most popular automaker in the country.

The Hilux obviously played a huge role with its 3,120 sales, but other fan favourites include the Corolla Cross crossover (1,949 units), the Starlet hatchback (1,322 units), the Fortuner SUV (984 units) and the Starlet Cross crossover (757 units).

It’s also worth noting that Lexus sold 84 vehicles last month, adding to Toyota’s total.

Another contributor to Toyota’s success is its business customers, as the commercial sector accounted for 3,740 sales in July – the highest since 2019.

Export numbers were also up, with 4,264 units leaving the company’s Durban factory for foreign markets.
