4 tips to protect your car

South Africa’s road traffic volumes skyrocket over the festive season as people travel to the coast, visit relatives, or take long-distance road trips.

This makes now a more vital time than ever to ensure your vehicle is in prime condition, whether you are driving 100km or 1000km.

It is not only to avoid breakdowns, but also to protect your car, yourself, and your family.

You also don’t need to be a technical expert or mechanic – simple preparation gets you a long way.

It can reduce the risk of mechanical failures, significantly lower the odds of experiencing a roadside emergency, save you from costly repairs, and perhaps even save your life.

There are a few simple checks that South Africans can do on their cars, which can mean the difference between being stranded on the roadside for hours and enjoying a stress-free roadtrip, warns Engen Product Manager Bhavish Vallabhjee, speaking to Arrive Alive.

1. Tyre checks

One of the most common causes of vehicle breakdowns during the holidays is tyre problems, according to Vallabhjee.

South Africans often expose their vehicles to more stress during this period, as they drive longer distances, load the whole family in the car with everyone’s luggage, and tow trailers that can add additional strain.

Factors like this cause tyre pressure changes that must be accounted for. Check your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure once your vehicle is loaded and before you hit the road.

It is also important to inspect the remaining tread depth on your tyres and make sure it meets the legal requirements, look for cracks and uneven wear, and double-check that you have your locknut if your vehicle has anti-theft wheel nuts.

2. Oil checks

It is vital to check your vehicle’s oil before heading on a long trip. Vallabhjee suggests that motorists check their oil levels, top up if needed, and then recheck after a few hundred kilometres if a top up was needed the first time.

Oil should also be replaced annually or according to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended intervals, and it is important to use the correct grade.

3. Check other fluids

Vallabhjee recommends South Africans check all fluid levels, not just oil, as other fluids play a crucial role in your vehicle’s safety and reliability.

It is worth checking coolant levels, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windscreen washer fluid to ensure a smooth and safe drive.

4. Stop, check, and rest

When you’re travelling long distances, it is important to take a breather while you’re refuelling.

Take the time at the service station to check your tyre pressure, oil, and refill your windscreen wash. Simple checks like this can prevent major problems down the line.

It is important not only to look after your car, but also to look after yourself as the driver.

While you’re refuelling and checking your car, take a break. Stay hydrated and take regular breaks to stay alert on your trip.

“Take your time, check your vehicle, and enjoy a smooth journey this festive season,” said Vallabhjee.
