Most popular crossovers under R400,000 in South Africa

Besides bakkies and hatchbacks, crossover SUVs are some of the most popular passenger car options for South Africa’s car buyers, especially those that offer good value for money.

The most popular choice last month was the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, which saw 1,871 units leave showroom floors nationwide, battling the VW Polo Vivo for a spot in the top three best-selling models overall.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on sales data reported to the Automotive Business Council (Naamsa).

While this is 17 fewer Tiggo 4 Pro models sold compared to March 2026, the Chery managed to climb up the rankings – thanks in part to the massive fall-off experienced by the Isuzu D-Max.

Unsurprisingly, second place was claimed by another budget Chinese crossover, the GWM Haval Jolion, which managed 1,277 units sold in April.

Completing the podium was the Suzuki Fronx, which was also the last model to manage four-figure sales with 1,113 sales last month.

The Omoda C5 claimed fourth place with 884 units sold, while the Toyota Urban Cruiser closed out the top five with 711 total sales.

The Kia Sonet found itself among the middle-of-the-pack with 689 in sixth, as the Toyota Starlet Cross managed 580 sales in seventh, and the Nissan Magnite managed to place eighth with 557 units.

Completing the top ten was the VW T-Cross, which managed 477 sales in April, followed by the Mahindra XUV 3X0 with 406 sales.

In total, the top 10 budget crossover SUVs sold a combined 8,565 units, representing nearly 18% of the 47,979 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.

South Africa’s favourite budget crossovers

Budget crossover SUVs managed to record more sales than the top 10 hatchbacks sold in South Africa last month, highlighting the shift in local buyer sentiment.
