Official petrol price for June, the new Isuzu D-Max, and a new tax for motorists renewing their car licences

These were the five biggest stories in South Africa’s transport industry this week.

Official petrol price increases for June announced

The latest fuel price adjustments came into effect this week on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.

The international product price of fuel decreased over the last month, resulting in a sizeable reduction of between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre for diesel users.

Petrol, on the other hand, increased by R1.43 per litre due to the reintroduction of the General Fuel Levy, which was heavily reduced in April.

Dawn of a new era for South Africa’s biggest transport company

The Transnet National Ports Authority has signed an agreement with the South African energy infrastructure project Ukwanda Liquefied Natural Gas to build and operate a regasification facility at the Port of Ngqura.

The project, which is valued at around R22 billion, will run for the next 25 years, despite full operations only expected to be in place by 2035.

Aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security by advancing the gas infrastructure needed to help stabilise the local electricity supply, it will also support long-term energy security in South Africa.

New tax proposed for motorists renewing their car licence in South Africa

Transport minister Barbara Creecy revealed that her department is considering implementing a new fee for motorists renewing their vehicle licence discs.

This fee would be introduced to support the Road Accident Fund as electric vehicle adoption continues to grow in South Africa.

EV owners do not contribute to the RAF because its revenue is derived from the Road Accident Fund Levy, a tax placed on every litre of petrol and diesel sold nationwide.

New Isuzu D-Max launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Isuzu has officially launched the updated D-Max in South Africa.

The D-Max, which is built in the Eastern Cape, is one of the country’s most popular vehicles, selling thousands of units per month.

The bakkie series has been updated for the 2026 Model Year, adding new features, improving the engine, and introducing additional derivatives.

New driving licence cards in the works for South Africa

South Africans may soon be able to apply for a digital driver’s licence before the planned new physical licence card.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that the Department of Home Affairs plans to launch digital IDs, driver’s licences, and matric certificates before the end of the year.

The draft digital identity regulations for public comment were gazetted in May 2026. These regulations are the legal framework for the MyMzansi platform, which will support the secure storage of digital IDs, driving licences, and other official civic records.
